This brick of a phone includes a projector, a camping light, and a 17,600mAh battery
  • The Tank X is a phone with a 220-lumen projector built in
  • It also includes a camping light and a night vision camera
  • Its battery is enormous at 17,600mAh

If you thought all phones were starting to feel the same, then you might want to check out 8849 - a brand you probably haven’t heard of, but one that’s quietly been putting all sorts of interesting features in its phones – including projectors.

The Tank X is the latest of these phones, though we’ve previously written about the Tank 4, which has a projector of its own. That one,th hough, is just 100 lumens, while the Tank X’s projector can deliver 220 lumens of brightness.

That’s still just one tenth of what the Epson Pro Cinema LS9000 projector for example can manage, but given that the projector here is built into a phone, it’s still fairly bright.

The Tank X also has a massive 17,600mAh battery, which puts even the 10,001mAh Realme P4 Power to shame, and which supports up to 120W charging.

There’s also a 1,200-lumen camping light, a 6.78-inch 1080 x 2460 screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 50MP main camera, a 64MP night vision one, an 8MP 3x telephoto, a 50MP front-facing camera, a mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage.

Big, heavy, and niche

With all of that tech packed in this of course isn’t a slim smartphone – in fact it’s positively enormous at 31.9mm thick and 750g. For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max – which is on the large side for a mainstream smartphone – is 8.8mm thick and 233g.

But then the Tank X isn’t intended to be a mainstream smartphone, it’s a niche device designed for use in the wilds – where that camping light, night vision camera, and big battery should come in very handy.

You might wonder about the projector and, well, so do we frankly. Marketing imagery shows the phone placed on a rock and projecting onto an unseen surface. So if you can find a suitable surface this could perhaps be a way to take movie nights on camping trips with you.

But while we’d think this feature would work better indoors than outside, we can see how having access to a projector anywhere and everywhere could prove useful. 8849 keeps making these phones anyway, so someone must be finding a use for them.

If you're one of those people, you'll be able to grab the Tank X from February 1, but pricing hasn't yet been revealed.
