- Sri Lanka vs England 1st ODI: Thu, Jan 22 at 4am ET / 9am GMT / 8pm AEDT (Fri)
Sri Lanka and England each have plenty to iron out in preparation for the T20 World Cup. The hosts appointed Vikram Rathour as their batting coach in a very loose arrangement just days before the series, which comprises a triple-header of ODIs followed by three T20Is, while the tourists are slap bang in the middle of a storm of their own making. Harry Brook continues with the white-ball captaincy with his stock at an all-time low after the omnishambles that was The Ashes.
The performances alone were disgraceful enough – and Brook himself was behind some of the most brainless shots of all – and then it emerged that several players had treated the series like a drinking tour, and that Brook had got into a scuffle with a bouncer the night before a November ODI in New Zealand. Brendan McCullum's indifference has infuriated supporters, but even he now seems to have clocked the depth of feeling.
England's ODI team features seven players who have only just returned from Australia, in what feels more like a challenge than a show of support. There's genuine excitement over Jacob Bethell after his flash of brilliance in Sydney, while senior men Joe Root and Jos Buttler are on hand to guide Brook. The likes of Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, however, may be playing for their international futures.
The Lions have also reshuffled their captains, placing Dasun Shanaka at the head of their T20I team in place of Charith Asalanka. They're in a far healthier position than England in the ODI picture, however. Sri Lanka currently rank fifth in the world, ahead of their opponents in eighth. Only the top eight gain automatic qualification to next year's 50-over World Cup.
